Micholas' family lives in a house made of unfired mud bricks & a straw roof. He attends primary school approximately 45 minutes from home. Micholas has had malaria but has been treated & is fully recovered. His mother is a peasant farmer & his father does not work. The family obtains water from a borehole with a hand pump less than a kilometer away. Washroom facilities are a a hole in the ground. The nearest health facility is about 45 minutes away. The major economic activity is estate growing of tea. The villagers are mostly subsistence farmers. The climate is conducive to maize, cassava and sweet potatoes.
Following the matrilineal kinship structure, which is predominant, land is inherited through the female members of the family, and is largely owned by females. |
